My guess is that your dresser was hand-made and they used an unconventional method for drawer glides using the rollers and ropes. Ordinarily, installing drawers with side-mount slides is very challenging. My problem is that the drawers have the grooves and the guides are male and made of cheap plastic. So, you need the wood on each side to be the right thickness so the attached metal slide sticks out far enough.
